Instructions for Use

  1. Power Supply:

    • Connect the VDD pin to a 3.3V power supply with a tolerance of ±5%.
    • Ensure that the power supply is stable and has adequate decoupling capacitors (e.g., 10 μF and 0.1 μF) placed close to the VDD pin.
  2. Grounding:

    • Connect all GND pins to a common ground plane to ensure proper signal integrity and reduce noise.
  3. Ethernet Interface:

    • Connect the LAN8720AI-CP-TR to an RJ45 connector using the appropriate differential pairs (TX+/TX-, RX+/RX-).
    • Use a common-mode choke and magnetics between the transceiver and the RJ45 connector to filter out common-mode noise.
  4. MII Interface:

    • Connect the MII interface pins (TXD[3:0], RXD[3:0], TX_EN, RX_DV, CRS, COL) to the corresponding pins on the MAC (Media Access Control) controller.
    • Ensure that the clock signals (TX_CLK, RX_CLK) are properly connected and synchronized.
  5. Configuration:

    • Use the MDIO (Management Data Input/Output) and MDC (Management Data Clock) pins to configure the transceiver via the PHY register set.
    • Refer to the device datasheet for specific register addresses and configuration values.
  6. Low-Power Mode:

    • To enter low-power mode, assert the PWRDN (Power Down) pin.
    • The transceiver will consume less than 15 mW in this mode.
  7. Wake-on-LAN:

    • Enable Wake-on-LAN by configuring the appropriate registers.
    • The transceiver can wake up the system from a low-power state upon receiving a magic packet or link status change.
  8. EMI Considerations:

    • Place the LAN8720AI-CP-TR as close as possible to the RJ45 connector to minimize trace lengths and reduce EMI.
    • Use a grounded metal shield over the transceiver if necessary to further reduce EMI.
  9. Storage and Handling:

    • Store the device in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight.
    • Handle the device with care to avoid static discharge, which can damage the sensitive components.
