Instructions for Use

  1. Power Supply:

    • Connect the Vcc pin (pin 16) to a 5V DC power supply.
    • Connect the GND pin (pin 8) to ground.
  2. Clock Input:

    • Connect the clock input (pin 17) to a 3.58 MHz (NTSC) or 3.54 MHz (PAL) oscillator.
  3. Control Inputs:

    • Connect the control inputs (pins 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7) to the appropriate control signals for game selection, player movement, and other game functions.
  4. Video Output:

    • Connect the composite video output (pin 18) to a video monitor or TV set.
    • The video output is a composite signal that includes both the video and sync information.
  5. Audio Output:

    • Connect the audio output (pin 19) to an audio amplifier or speaker.
    • The audio output is a simple square wave that can be modulated by the game logic.
  6. Reset Input:

    • Connect the reset input (pin 20) to a reset signal to initialize the chip at the start of a new game.
  7. Test Mode:

    • Use the test mode input (pin 21) to perform diagnostic tests on the chip.
  8. Ground Connections:

    • Ensure all ground connections (pins 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) are properly connected to ground for stable operation.
  9. Signal Levels:

    • All digital inputs and outputs are TTL compatible (0V for low, 5V for high).
  10. Heat Dissipation:

    • While the chip operates at a relatively low power, ensure adequate ventilation or heat sinking if operating in a high-temperature environment.

Notes:

  • The AY-3-8760 is designed to work with a variety of external components, including resistors, capacitors, and oscillators, which are necessary for proper operation.
  • Refer to the specific application notes and datasheets provided by General Instrument for detailed circuit diagrams and additional configuration options.
